Machon Yaakov

Jerusalem, Jerusalem

Machon Yaakov is a small, English-speaking yeshiva in Har Nof for post-college men and young professionals, generally in their 20s and early 30s. Many students come from little or no formal Jewish background and are looking to build a serious Torah life while still seeing themselves as professionals and living in the modern world. The program is built around serious Gemara learning, Jewish philosophy, ethics and personal development. Students are expected to develop the ability to learn independently and to think deeply about Judaism rather than simply being given information. The program is normally two years, although some students stay for one year because of professional commitments. The atmosphere is small, serious and personal. There are only around 15-20 new students each year, with a lot of interaction with the rabbeim and evening one-on-one learning. Machon Yaakov puts a strong emphasis on character development and helping students understand how Torah fits into their future careers, marriages, families and everyday lives. The yeshiva is particularly suited to an academically minded young man who has come through college or a professional environment and wants to become more serious about Judaism without leaving that part of his identity behind. Its students have gone on to careers in areas such as finance, medicine, technology, law, consulting, education and social work. Machon Yaakov was founded in 2005 by Rabbi Beryl Gershenfeld and Rabbi Avraham Yitzchok Jacobs. It is closely connected to the Machon Shlomo community, but Machon Yaakov is specifically geared toward the post-college and young-professional student and has a strong emphasis on intellectual development, personal responsibility and integrating Torah with a professional life.
